Skin Resurfacing

Chemical peels promote the regeneration of the skin’s surface, revealing smoother, healthier layers of skin. During a peel treatment a chemical peel solution is applied to the treatment area, causing the upper layer or layers of the epidermis to breakdown. As part of the skin’s normal healing process, new skin cells regenerate to replace the cells removed in the peeling process. Deeper peels will also induce collagen production, which will lead to tighter skin tone. It is recommended that the skin is prepared for peeling with medical grade active skin care products. This results in better uptake of the peeling agent and a more even result. It is also vital that a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and SPF 30+ is worn, both before and after the peel, to minimise the risk of complications along with the use of medical grade mineral makeup. There are a number of different types and strengths of chemical peels and the type of peel used is dependent on the skin condition and problems and well as the amount of peeling that can be tolerated. Your therapist will discuss the treatment options available in your initial consultation.

Glycolic, Salicylic, Lactic, Mandalic

Glycolic acid is the smallest of the alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) family allowing for maximum acid penetration. Glycolic acid enhances the breakdown of desmosomes speeding up the skin’s desquamation process. It has many different uses in skin peeling, most notably its effects on collagen production to help produce a firmer, plumped skin appearance to tackle premature ageing.

Lactic acid is an AHA which breaks down the bonds between skin cells. This allows dead skin cells to be lightly buffed away revealing a fresh, hydrated and radiant complexion. It is also able to inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme which forms melanin pigments in the skin, making it ideal for use on hyperpigmented skin concerns.

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) with a powerful keratolytic, comedolytic, anti inflammatory and antimicrobial effect. It dissolves the intercellular cement, reducing the adhesion of corneocytes and encouraging superficial skin restructuring without producing inflammatory infiltration. Also, because of its lipophilicity, it easily penetrates the pilosebaceous ducts, controlling sebaceous secretion. Salicylic peels are suitable for all types of skins, particularly dry skins with a tendency to hyperkeratinisation and oily, acne prone, comedogenic and/or seborrheic skins. It is also recommended for areas of the body such as the arms, back, knees, etc.

Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid with the power of beta hydroxy acids, mandelic acid is both oil and water soluble. This allows it to penetrate into oily pores while working on the upper layers of the skin. Within the pores it can work to breakdown blockages of dead skin cells and sebum which can stretch out the pores. On the surface of the skin it can exfoliate away dead skin cells to trigger cellular renewal and a more structured epidermis. This leaves the complexion renewed and luminised while fine lines are smoothed.
